You should experiment to see which 3 officers, from the 6 odd crew will give the best stats, When to break synergy. In the case of cadet Uhura (E), cadet McCoy (S), and instructor Spock (S) your defence is much better ignoring full synergy. Engineer, Scientist, and Scientist is a low synergy crew. 3% less to officer ability.
