Edit: to answer you question. It can be a very good wizard supplement with ranged weapon, heavy CC and some buffing. It can be a very good nuker if you build that way and the pet especially early on can be a tank/off tank or a trip machine or a decent damage dealer (at least until lvl 10ish) when it starts to lag behind a well geared companion.
